The MIT Media Lab

The MIT Media Lab applies an unorthodox research approach to envision the impact of emerging technologies on everyday life—technologies that promise to fundamentally transform our most basic notions of human capabilities. Unconstrained by traditional disciplines, Lab designers, engineers, artists, and scientists work atelier-style in close to 30 research groups conducting more than 400 projects that range from neuroengineering, to how children learn, to developing the city car of the future. Lab researchers foster a unique culture of learning by doing, developing technologies that empower people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all societies, to design and invent new possibilities for themselves and their communities.

NextLab

NextLab is a hands-on technology development and business case design course in which multi-disciplinary student teams collaborate with industry partners, field experts, NextLab alumni, and students from universities worldwide to deploy ground-breaking platforms of smartphone technologies that address challenges of global significance. These mobile platforms then become the basis for out-of-the box innovation within industries (project Hammock), new open source initiatives (Mocamobile.org), or fundable startups (EmpleoListo.com).

Llamadas Heladas

Llamadas Heladas was founded in 2005 when founders Brian Forde and Edgard Cruz rented a wall inside of an Ice Cream shop and installed 5 wooden phone cabins. Offering inexpensive international phone calls in one of the hottest cities in the country, they came up with the novel idea of providing air conditioning in the phone booths – a first for Nicaragua. Today the company has stores throughout the country providing national & international calls, internet computers and other valued added services.
